Ranches in South Texas

Surrounded by the Gulf Coast to the east, the Hill Country to the northwest, the Prairies and Lakes region to the northeast, and Mexico to the west, the South Texas Plains – or just South Texas – is one of the most ecologically and culturally diverse regions in the Lone Star State. The area’s abundant wildlife and wealth of scenic views are two of the main reasons behind the continuous appeal of South Texas ranches.

There’s still a great deal of undeveloped land in the region and it’s not uncommon to find ranches in South Texas that sprawl over hundreds of acres. Compared to the state average, in fact, ranches in South Texas are generally larger.

The South Texas region, which is characterized primarily by flat terrain that stretches out as far as the eye can see, is ideal for ranching. Flat doesn’t mean dull, however. Though there is an abundance of mesquite and other thorny brush species, the region also includes rolling hills lush with trees and wildflowers, as well as numerous pockets of green watered by rivers, lakes and streams.

Apart from the beauty of the land itself, South Texas is also well-known for its colorful culture and a history that stretches back hundreds of years. Some of the state’s oldest towns and cities can be found here, a number of which were established long before the existence of the Lone Star State.
